I initially tried to use a system running Windows Media Center Edition. But on it, ZA's user interface completely froze up again and again. I switched to a plain Win XP box and completed the tests without incident. The firewall also resisted all of my attempts to disable it the way a malicious program might. I couldn't kill its processes, turn off its services, tweak its settings to "off" in the Registry, or even turn it off using simulated mouse-clicks most firewalls fail that last test —an impressive performance.
Check Point continues to find new ways to reduce the number of pop-up queries from the firewall's Program Control. During the install it offers to scan your system and pre-configure access for any programs found in its capacious SmartDefense Advisor database.
And by default SmartDefense Advisor automatically configures access for any new programs it recognizes. In addition, Program Control starts off in a new "Auto-learn" mode that's slightly less secure but cuts down on pop-ups. After 7 to 21 days it automatically cranks protection up to Maximum.
The lowered security in Auto-learn was amply evident when I tested the firewall against fifteen leak-test utilities—programs that demonstrate techniques malware uses to evade ordinary program control.
The OSFirewall and antivirus features blocked five of these, but the other ten did their dirty deeds with impunity. When I raised the protection to Maximum, ZA blocked all but two of them, better than any firewall I've tested except for Outpost Firewall Pro which blocked them all. I can't make a direct comparison with NIS because Norton's product only blocks programs it deems truly malicious. Leak tests are just pretending to be nasty, so NIS lets them pretend. I did try enabling the advanced program and component control options in hopes of catching the two leak tests that got away, but all I got for my trouble was a ton of pop-ups.
It can perform standard content-based analysis to decide what's spam and what's valid. But you can optionally set it to send a challenge when it isn't certain whether the message is spam, or to send a challenge to any sender who's not on your approved list. It prefills the approved list from your contacts and automatically adds those to whom you send mail.
The antispam module offers special handling for mailing-list addresses—any message that contains such an address in the To or From field will be allowed.
ZA's spam filter has always done very well in testing. The suite's configuration includes a series of sliders to adjust how aggressively it will block various categories of spam. I left these all at their default settings but enabled blocking of messages in foreign languages. Then I let it handle almost 4, messages from two spam-infested e-mail accounts.
As in previous tests, ZA didn't put any valid mail from individuals in the spam folder, and it diverted only a handful of newsletter-type bulk e-mails. But it let nearly 20 percent of undeniable spam into the Inbox, compared with 2 percent when I last tested it. It appears this is because of the current flood of "image spam," which is very difficult to analyze.
More important and encouraging, however, is that it had zero false positives. I can deal with throwing out some spam, but I really don't want to miss a real message. In addition to blocking spam and scanning attachments for viruses, ZA has several other tricks to protect your mail.
By default, Inbound MailSafe quarantines all e-mail attachments that could possibly carry malware—you can still launch them, but you have to confirm twice that you know it's dangerous. Disable email scanning in the McAfee product and enable real-time scanning. Support CA provides support online with access to a detailed knowledge base, e-mail support, and live-chat support in selected markets. Conclusion We remember PestPatrol, and we remember when it consistently placed high in our roundups of antispyware applications. Although we applaud CA for rebranding all of their consumer products within a vastly simplified nomenclature, we suspect little was done behind the scenes on the antispyware engine itself.
Robert Vamosi. CA Anti-Spyware ranked second to last in our top ten list; suffers from a few interface bugs; telephone support is expensive. Glitches within the interface and poor scanning and removal performance lead us not to recommend CA Anti-Spyware despite its three-user license.
