Anyway, as has been stated before, the correct approach with such old systems is not reactive AV, but proactively putting them out of harms way. I would be more worried that this is no longer for a long time being patched, AV wont help if a vulnerability causes you data loss or encrypts your files.
Thanks for all the replies. It is already a Virtual Machine and we have advised the business that they should move to a supported OS but they are reluctant because of the effort and cost it would take to move the in house app they have running on there.
We have risks raised to cover us against this but as you have advised, I will ensure that this VM only has the required access it needs and is isolated as far as possible from the rest of the environment with regular backups.
Thanks again for all the advice. Most of the old stuff can run on a newer OS. It's usually not the newer OS that is a problem, but just getting it moved to any other machine that is the problem. Still have the installers? Since it's a VM, can you take a copy and try to upgrade to Windows ?
If you can get to Windows , maybe you can get all the way to ? That's as far as you could go by upgrading a 32bit server OS.
