If you BIOS has the options, disable onboard audio and other integrated devices The goal is to simplify things to minimize problems with windows until we can get it installed. Begin a fresh Windows install again Press F5 not F6.

Shortly after, you'll be prompted to choose a HAL layer. Choose "Standard PC". This may help you if the issue is caused by the detection of hardware.

RTX series incoming? But after all this it still freezes at 34 minutes. After work i will try a different XP cd which i have and see if that works, but any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

I know theres a help file hting on microsoft but all that tell you to do is what i have already tried above except the thing which requires getting to dos prompt as i cant seem to get to there. All forum topics Previous Topic Next Topic. Replies 7.

Joey, read this carefully. As i said i think ive read through that microsoft help and tried it all. Apart from the dos prompt stuff as i cant get to it :. Did you read any of the log files as suggested in the article? Setup tries to identify the device that is causing the problem and tries to skip the device on the next restart. You may have to restart your computer multiple times.

I have similar problem trying to upgrade to XP Pro -- basically at the 34 minute it asks for a CD Modem driver file and I cannot select "OK" or "Cancel" due to my keyboard or mouse being disabled. According to the article, you have to restart the PC multiple times, to get past the problem driver.

Ok its sorted! Well, outside of the aforementioned mouse. Furthermore, it was heavily used until a laptop was purchased. So, it may be general wear-and-tear that's giving the hardware some stress. Freeman wrote: It is too bad that the hidden partition is not available for a system restore to the OOBE. Load up the hidden system restore, and check to see if all the drivers are up to date, etc etc? If the system restore route doesn't work, I'll phone Dell, to get a replacement disc.

Would anyone know if a replacement disc would cost money; if so. Thanks again, guys! You guys have been a tremendous help! No, ACCS may be correct that it is a hardware problem. If that is the Dell XP disc that came with the computer, and it already has SP2 on it, the hard drive may be failing.

You could try a different hard drive to rule out the current drive. I think Freeman was hoping there may be another way to install XP, via a hidden hard drive partition. You could check for this possibility by using an Ubuntu Linux disc to look at what is the Dell hard drive, or you could put the drive in another computer and see what, if anything, is on it.

You will see the option of performing a System Recovery with warnings about losing all user data on the hard drive. If you're able to get there, bingo, you're golden.

That will restore the hard drive to the condition it was in when it brand new, out of the box. You will need to retrieve all the updates from Microsoft since that point, and get rid of any craptacular pre-installed software you do not want. Have you repeated the process a couple times? If it always freezes exactly at the "37 minutes" mark, I doubt that's failing hardware, if it hangs at different points, I would point to failing hardware.

If it's always at the 37 minute mark, then I'd bet it's some older default driver that XP that is screweing it up. You could try slipstreaming in SP3 and newer drivers. Aah, OK. Thanks for the clarification on OOBE. I've tried the OOBE a couple of times, to no avail.

I'll try it again this evening, to see if it works. And, yes, I've tried the process a couple of times. It always stops at the 37 minute mark.
